Ultra-miniature Fiber Optic Pressure Monitoring

SA Instruments has developed the capability to continuously monitor physiological pressure using ultra-miniature, fiber optic sensors.  The minimally invasive pressure monitoring system is an option for the Model 1025 and 1030 systems for use with MR and for the model 1025L and 1025T systems for use with CT, PET, SPECT, Optical and in the laboratory. The ultra-miniature sensors are intended for use in small infusion needles, catheters and guide  wires enabling minimally invasive physiology pressure measurements.

Description

SA Instruments has developed the capability to continuously monitor physiological pressure using ultra-miniature, fiber optic sensors.  The minimally invasive pressure monitoring system is an option for the Model 1025 and 1030 systems for use with MR and for the model 1025L and 1025T systems for use with CT, PET, SPECT, Optical and in the laboratory. The ultra-miniature sensors are intended for use in small infusion needles, catheters and guide  wires enabling minimally invasive physiology pressure measurements. The ultra-miniature pressure sensors can be used to measure pressure in a number of locations like the aorta, left ventricle of the heart, ventricles of the brain and in the spinal canal. However, for many users, the most exciting application is to provide minimally invasive, continuous monitoring of blood pressure and heart rate by simply inserting the sensor tip into an artery. The ultra-miniature pressure sensor consists of a tiny silicon cavity attached to a relatively long fiber optic cable. White light is sent via the fiber to and from the cavity.  Polarization interferometer processing electronics precisely computes the Fabry-Perot cavity length and determines the corresponding pressure reading.  An internal manometer automatically corrects the reading for changes in atmospheric pressure. When the system is used to provide minimally invasive, continuous monitoring of blood pressure in the MR environment, the Fiber Optic Pressure Module is positioned just outside the MR magnet bore and a ultra-miniature pressure sensor extends into the bore to the animal. The Model 1025 and 1025L PC-sam software can accommodate up to 3 pressure channels.  All three channels can be present at the same time on the same waveform display. Pressure data is automatically analyzed and values are displayed for systolic, diastolic, mean arterial pressure, a cardiac gate and heart rate.
